WTO DG Race: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Scales Through To Next Stage
Nigeria’s former Finance Minister and a former Managing Director at the World Bank, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala successfully made it to the next stage to be the next Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
This came as members disqualified three candidates from the race.
Geneva-based WTO explained that Egypt’s Hamid Mamdouh, Mexico’s Jesus Seade and Moldova’s Tudor Ulianovschi did not secure enough support in the first of the three rounds of voting. A statement by the General Council Chairman, David Walker, he said “Their expertise, high professional and personal qualities are highly valued and respected by all members”.
September 24 would be the beginning of the second phase of consultations which would run until October 6 after which two final candidates would be announced targeted to be named by November 7.
The candidates still in the race are; Liam Fox from the United Kingdom, Amina Chawahir Mohamed Jibril from Kenya, Yoo Myung-hee from South Korea and Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri from Saudi Arabia.
