Why I Almost Quit Nollywood– Actress Mercy Aigbe
Popular actress Mercy Aigbe has opened up about a distressing encounter with sexual harassment that nearly led her to quit the industry.
During an interview on TVC’s ‘Your Views’ talk show, Aigbe recounted an incident where a producer in Surulere lured her with the promise of a role in an upcoming film.
Despite successfully passing three audition stages, she was dismayed to be offered a minor role. Upon expressing her dissatisfaction, the producer, who had been making advances previously, revealed that she needed to be close to him to secure a significant role, citing the director’s unfamiliarity with her.
Feeling insulted and upset, Aigbe firmly resisted the inappropriate advances during the encounter.
Recalling the incident, she stated, “I thought if that was what it took to be an actress, I did not want to be an actress anymore. I tore the script and eventually left.”
The emotional toll was intensified as she reflected on leaving a stable job to pursue a career in Nollywood while being a single mother.
Despite facing other challenges in the industry, Aigbe emphasized that she persevered and eventually reached the pinnacle of success through unwavering consistency.
