US, Qatar Push for Gaza Ceasefire Despite Haniyeh’s Killing
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken and Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani have reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, despite the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Excel Magazine International can report.
Blinken emphasized that the “imperative of getting a ceasefire” remains a top priority, while Qatar warned that Haniyeh’s assassination could jeopardize the talks.
Qatar, which has been mediating between Hamas and Israel, expressed concerns about the impact of Haniyeh’s killing on the negotiations.
In a social media post, Qatar’s prime minister asked, “How can mediation succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side?”
An Israeli government spokesperson responded, saying they remain committed to ceasefire negotiations and want the hostage deal to succeed.
The continued efforts towards a ceasefire come as tensions in the region remain high following Haniyeh’s killing. International leaders are urging restraint and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
