US Election: An Overview of The Two Presidential Candidates

Twelve days to the United States Presidential election, Americans will decide who becomes the next President between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Hopeful Joe Biden.

Both candidates have been at the White House serving in different capacities: with Donald Trump as the incumbent President and Joe Biden having served as the Vice President during Barack Obama’s tenure. But we should be aware that Joe Biden has a lot of experience because he has been in the United States Politics since the 1970s.

Presidential election in US May not necessarily show how popular a candidate is in the country. Popularity is not always the way to predict the result in a US election. The Electoral College determines who emerges as the winner in any US Presidential election after the votes. So winning the most votes may not win you the election.

The Democrat, Joe Biden seems to be having upper hand in most national polls since the beginning of the year. Having about 50% in recent months and has had a 10-point lead on occasions.
Let us recall that Donald Trump and Joe Biden went on head-to-head in the first live TV debate on September 29.

The two candidates have had their differences and both questioning each other in some decisions. Lately will be Trump’s intention to appoint another Supreme Court Justice few weeks to the election after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sometime in September. Donald Trump said it is his constitutional right to fill the vacancy on the court during the remainder of his first term in Office. The President put forward Conservative Judge, Amy Coney Barrett for the position. But Joe Biden wants the seat to be filled after the next president enters office.

Mr. Biden has explained earlier that he will work to pass legislation to assure a woman’s right to an abortion if the Supreme Court rules against it.

On foreign policies, Trump promised to bring down US troop levels oversees, while investing in the military. He will also push to maintain the trade tariffs on China. But Biden has a different intention and has promised to repair relationships with US allies. He reiterated he will do away with unilateral tariffs in China and hold them ransom with an international coalition that China “cannot afford to ignore”.

Looking at the Economy of the United States, Mr. Biden has a plan of raising the taxes for high earners to pay for investment in public services. Although he pointed out that the increase will be only on those earning over $400,000 a year. Trump on the other hand has promised to create 10 million jobs in 10 months and create one million new small businesses.

The two candidates virtually have their various agenda different from one another and that is why Americans see the November 3rd election as a crucial one.

As the two candidates prepare for their final debate on Thursday, they will have their microphones muted to allow each candidate a block of uninterrupted time to speak and avoid the rancor of the two candidates’ first encounter sometime last month.

The Commission on Presidential Debates, the Sponsor of the televised debate in Nashville pointed out that the changes were necessary to avoid the bad-tempered first debate.
It would be recalled that Trump occasionally interrupted Biden during the encounter in Cleveland on September 29.

The debate on Thursday is likely to center on families, climate change and race, but Trump’s camp wants the discussion to focus more on foreign policy. On the other hand, Biden’s campaign stated that both sides earlier had agreed to let the Moderators choose the subjects for the debate.
