It was a sad day for the former Governor of Abia State and the Senator who is currently representing the good people of Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzo Kalu as a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment.
He was facing 39-count charges ranging from money laundering to scam while in office as the executive governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007.
Excel Magazine gathered that Kalu was tried alongside Udeh Udeogu, the Director of Finance and Account in Abia State when Kalu was the governor of the state and Kalu’s company, SLOK Nigeria Limited.
Delivering the judgement, Justice Mohammed Idris ruled that Kalu and his co-defendants were found guilty of the charges levelled against them which had been ongoing for 12 years now.
Kalu and his co-defendants were accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) of conspiracy and misappropriation of over N7 billion from the coffers of the state.
The prosecutor claimed that the N7.1 billion formed part of funds illegally derived from the treasury of the Abia State Government and which was converted into several bank drafts before they were paid into the said company’s account.
