Speaker McCarthy Launches Impeachment Inquiry Against President Biden

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has Tuesday announced that he has instructed three GOP-led committees to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, Excel Magazine International reports.

This impeachment probe stems from allegations that President Biden directly profited from his son, Hunter’s business deals.

McCarthy, in a brief public appearance, stated, “This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public”.

Speaker McCarthy asserted that President Biden had misled the American people regarding his knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings.

The impeachment inquiry will be overseen by Republican Representative, James Comer of Kentucky, who chairs the House Oversight Committee.

Corner will work in coordination with Jim Jordan, Chair of the Judiciary Committee, and Jason Smith, Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, both Republicans from Ohio and Missouri, respectively.

Ian Sams, the spokesperson for the White House counsel’s office, countered the allegations, stating that House Republicans have been investigating President Biden for nine months and have failed to unearth any evidence of wrongdoing.

However, Speaker McCarthy’s decision to direct the committees to initiate the investigation without a House vote suggests a lack of sufficient support within the House for such proceedings.

Although Senate Republicans remain skeptical of the evidence presented by the House and question whether it justifies an impeachment inquiry.

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee had initiated an investigation in January into allegations of President Biden profiting from his son Hunter’s business dealings during his vice presidency.

Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the oversight committee, labeled the GOP investigation as “a complete and total bust” in a statement issued on Monday.

Speaker McCarthy faces pressure from right-wing members of his party to take a more direct stance against President Biden in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.

These demands have gained momentum as Congress confronts a looming deadline at the end of the month to avert a government shutdown.
