Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya over the weekend visited Senegal.
The visit was part of the Spanish government’s diplomatic response to the continuous migrant arrivals to Canary Islands from West African countries.
During the visit, Gonzalez Laya met with the President of Senegal, Macky Sall to discuss issues on migration and border cooperation between Spain, the European Union and Senegal.
The country has become a major point of migrant departures even though it is around 950 miles (1500 kilometers away.
Many people running away from violence and other circumstances in West Africa continues to arrive at Europe.
Laya and her Senegalese counterpart Aissata Tall Sall signed an agreement on social security that would enable Spanish citizens in Senegal and Senegalese citizens in Spain to continue assisting to their nation’s own social security despite being abroad.
This action is to help facilitate the voluntary return of Senegalese migrants in Spain.
