South East Governors Set for ‘Peace Project’ in Umuahia
The Governors of the five South East states—Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo—are expected to grace the unveiling of the ‘Peace in South East Project’ in Umuahia on Friday, December 29, Excel Magazine International has gathered.
Anticipated attendees include traditional rulers, opinion leaders, captains of industry, and eminent personalities from diverse political affiliations.
In a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, Mrs. Mary Ikoku, Chairman of the Media and Communication Committee of the project, disclosed that the event coincides with a homecoming reception for Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
The initiative aims to acknowledge Kalu’s dedication to public service and outstanding contributions to the South East and the nation.
Ikoku emphasized that the Peace in South East Project advocates a non-kinetic approach to address security challenges, urging the Nigerian military to adjust its strategy by fostering trust and cooperation through dialogue with the people.
“We recognize the sacrifices of the security agencies in addressing insecurity in the South East, but we call for a twerking of their operational strategy through negotiation. A beacon of hope is here with a new non-kinetic approach. Let us dialogue and have a conversation with our people who are up in arms. All we want is peace in the South-East,” she stated.
Discussing the thematic areas, Mr. Ogbonna Ukuku, Head of Programmes, praised the House of Representatives for passing the bill on the establishment of the South-East Development Commission.
He highlighted that the program signifies the formal declaration of peace in the South-East and outlined potential intervention areas such as agriculture, education, leadership, good governance, sports and entertainment, culture, and tourism.
The event is poised to be a significant gathering, drawing participants from across the country, symbolizing a unified commitment to peace in the South-East.
