SEYCHELLES ELECTIONS: Opposition Wins Power after 43 Years

 

The 2020 Seychelles elections seem to have ushered in a new dawn as opposition candidate, Wavel Ramakalawan defeated president Danny Faure In the presidential elections to be declared winner.

The win sees the opposition come into power, ending a 43-year wait that has lasted since 1977. Anglican priest, Ramakalawan defeated president Danny Faure 54.9% to 43.5% to win the elections.

Since the announcement, supporters of the opposition stormed the streets of the capital, victoria, to celebrate the news.

In his victory speech, Wavel Ramakalawan expressed conciliation towards his opponent Faure, stating there no winners or losers.

He said, ” Mr Fayre and I are good friends. An election does not mean the end to one’s contribution to his motherland. In this election – there were no losers, there were no winners. Our country was given The opportunity as the ultimate winner”

It is reported president Danny Faure was sitting close by during The speech, nodding in approval. The African nation finally witnesses a change to leadership after Faure’s united party retained power after introduction of multi-party system in 1993.
