Senate ready to deliberate on bill that proposes financial autonomy for Local Governments.

The Nigerian Senate in a fresh bid to ensure Local Government Council Financial Autonomy will this week deliberate on a bill that will give full legal backing to the financial autonomy for Local Government Areas in Nigeria.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Rose Oko, A PDP senator from Cross River State will abrogates the existing joint account between the state and local governments when passed.

Excel Magazine gathered that the bill stipulates that each state is mandated to pay local government councils in its area of jurisdiction such proportion of its internally generated revenue in such terms that will be prescribed by the House of Assembly in the state.

According to the bill,’each local government councils is to create and maintain its own special account to be called Local Government Allocation Account into which all allocations due to the local government council shall be paid directly from the Federation Account and from the government of the state’.

‘The House of Assembly of each state shall by law prescribe such percentage of the money allocated to the state and it’s local government council from the Federation Account to be used for the purpose of payment of salaries of primary school teachers and such other purposes’.
