Round-Up Of Latest On EndSARS Protest In Nigeria

Nigerians have continued to protest across the country as the Federal government appealed for calm.

The government also promised to carry out reforms while ensuring that police personnel found wanting for brutality or illegal crimes is brought to book.
Earlier on Friday, the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo appealed for calm while acknowledging the slow pace of police reforms.

In his tweet he said;

“Dear Nigerians, I know that many of you are angry and understandably so. We could have moved faster and for this we are sorry”

“We understand that you want to see action from us and I am here to tell you that work is ongoing. I chaired a meeting of 36 state governors and the Minister of the FCT (NEC), where we resolved to set up judicial panels of inquiry so we can see justice served and fast”

He also noted that none of the former members of the Special Anti-Robbery Unit will make up tactical formations.

In another related development, international hackers known as anonymous have taken over major Twitter accounts in Nigeria. For instance, the group took over Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation Twitter account. Anonymous had earlier stated that it would begin series of operations towards supporting the EndSARS movement.

The Chief Executive Officer of Twitter, Jack also supported the movement while calling on Nigerians to donate to the movement.

His action drew the ire of Adamu Garba who threatened to sue Jack stating that he should stay away from politics but in what would seem as a reply, Jack tweeted the next day supporting again, EndSARS. He also said Twitter has designed an emoji in support of the movement.

Nigerians have continued to block major roads in Lagos, Abuja and other highways causing gridlock and halt of economic activities.

The protesters are stating that while the Nigerian government has assured of police reforms, the action in the past few days have not shown similar intent, they say despite the announcement, police officials have continued to molest Nigerians signaling a discord between government announcement and the current day reality.

Governors in Nigeria have also decided to set up funds aimed at compensating victims of police brutality.

In Nigeria’s commercial city, Lagos, Babajide Sanwoolu who is the governor of the state announced a 200million naira fund to ensure that victims of police brutality in the state are well compensated.

Nigerian Youths have been praised over managing of monies raised put at over 40million naira, the money has been used for feeding , medical expenses, entertainment and other logistics for the protest.

The Presidential panel set-up for the purpose of police brutality has also sent in their recommendations. 37 persons were recommended for dismissal and 24 officials for prosecution.
It remains unclear how many more days the protest will last with over 10 days of protest already by the Youths.
