Reps Give Tinubu Conditions Over Subsidy Removal
By Boniface Ihiasota, USA
The House of Representatives has formally requested President Bola Tinubu-led administration to implement palliative measures aimed at alleviating the impact of the removal of petroleum subsidies on Nigerian citizens.
This resolution was articulated in a report submitted by a committee that was established last year to investigate the issue of subsidies.
The committee’s report was thoroughly reviewed and approved by the Committee of the Whole on Thursday.
Among the recommendations endorsed by the House is the acquisition of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, which utilize gas instead of petroleum as fuel.
The House emphasizes the urgent need for the Federal Government to promptly devise strategies and palliative measures to mitigate the repercussions of subsidy removal on Nigerians, effective from the year 2023.
One proposed measure is the provision and procurement of CNG buses, which offer an alternative transportation system with lower fuel consumption costs.
They further asked the government to introduce an intermodal, regional, and national transport system to facilitate the efficient movement of people across the country.
