Putin Announces Bid for Fifth Term as Russian President
Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially declared his candidacy for a fifth term in office, making the announcement during an awards ceremony for participants in the Ukraine conflict.
Excel Magazine International reports the declaration follows the recent setting of election dates for March 15-17, 2024.
The 71-year-old leader’s re-election appears imminent, given the limited opposition and firm control of Russian media.
Having previously served as president from 2000-2008 and returning in 2012, Putin’s extended tenure surpasses any ruler in Russia since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.
The 2020 constitutional amendment, increasing the presidential term to six years, allows Putin a fresh opportunity to run, potentially extending his presidency until 2030 if re-elected in March.
Despite facing challenges resulting from the Ukraine conflict and tensions with the West, Putin is expected to encounter minimal opposition. Genuine opponents are either deceased, incarcerated, or in exile.
The Federation Council, Russia’s upper house of parliament, confirmed the election, and the electoral commission set the three-day voting period.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted a substantial public desire for Putin to continue as leader.
Putin’s announcement occurred during an informal gathering after a Kremlin ceremony honoring Ukraine war veterans. His decision reflects the timing to address the pressing need for leadership decisions amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
