Oyo Govt Bans Styrofoam
The Oyo State Government has taken a decisive step towards enhancing food safety standards by prohibiting the use of styrofoam for food services, storage, and related purposes.
This move, announced by the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, during the Food Safety Stakeholders Forum and the inauguration of the Food Safety Compliance Enforcement Task Force, underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
The decision to ban styrofoam aligns with a resolution passed by the state House of Assembly on February 8, 2024, urging the government to take action in this regard.
Ajetunmobi emphasized that the enforcement of food safety regulations is crucial for preventing foodborne illnesses and ensuring the consumption of wholesome edibles.
Representing the commissioner at the event, Permanent Secretary Akintunde Ayinde stressed the importance of proactive measures in preserving public health, stating, “Prevention is better and cheaper than cure.”
He highlighted the rampant misuse of chemical products in food production and packaging, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to food standards.
The newly inaugurated Food Safety Compliance Enforcement Task Force will play a pivotal role in sensitizing stakeholders along the food chain about the significance of adhering to food safety standards.
This task force, led by Permanent Secretary Ayinde, comprises members from various sectors, including the state Food Safety Management Committee, the Nigeria Police Force, and industry associations.
