OAU : Students express fear as theft issues bites harder

Blames varsity management

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife has expressed fear over the re occurent robbery in theft issues in the outskirt area of the varsity.

This was made known to our Correspondent in seperate interviews.

Speaking with a student, who pleaded anonymity as he doesn’t want his name to be in print because of the sensitivity of the matter has said students who stay in town now live in fear.

In his words, he said ” we are now scared of sleeping in our houses in town. The robbery attack in different hostels is getting too much and the Nigerian Police Force are not helping issues likewise also the Hospital “

“The Hospital caused the death of the student that was killed a day to Christmas. This are things that should be look into” he said

Speaking with another student, James Agbor who narrated the ordeal of the robbery attack that happened at the Adam and Eve last night, 8th of January, 2019.

Speaking with our correspondent, he said ” they were seven hefty men and they came in with cutlass and pistols. They came to the room of the guy that rescued the student that was killed a day before Christmas but our effort in reaching the men of the Nigeria Police Force was effortless as their lines weren’t reachable “

“The Varsity management should be able to do something, all this are happening because of the accommodation policies embarked upon by the school which 90% of the students are staying off campus. These should be considered as the life of students are in danger” he added

Stakeholders Reacts

Reacting to this the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Public Relations Officer, Mrs Oluwakemi Fasoto has denied the allegation that their hospital has not been competent.

While speaking with our correspondent, she said their hospital has been known to be very competent and accessible to people.

Also reacting to this, the Spokesman of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife has said the Varsity is only meant for providing Quality education to the students and not to provide accomodation.

In his words, he said “we are just fulfilling our parental obligations that’s why we are been caring. It is the security agencies that are in charge of the students outside the Varsity. When you go to other schools things are not done this way, we are just been caring” he said

Efforts to call the Assistant Commissioner of Police,Mr Funso Adegboye Osun State proved abortive as his line weren’t reachable as at the time of filing this report.

It should be recalled that the Accommodation policies embarked upon by the school management resulted to almost 90% of the students staying outside the school which has resulted to been endangered.
