Nollywood to Netflix : African movies continue to captivate global Audiences

The global movie industry is a vast and ever-dynamic industry. With the continuous advance of technology, the film industry has witnessed tremendous change in the various intricacies of film making.

Notably, is the meteoric rise of the Nigerian movie Industry, popularly known as ‘Nollywood’. The Nollywood industry has grown to great heights in recent years, with its promotion of Nigerian and African content at large beginning to slowly captivate world audiences.

Netflix, recently, bought the rights of two of Nollywood’s highest grossing films. “The Wedding Party” (2016), it’s sequel (2017), as well as the much praised “Lionheart” (2018), a movie which gained plenty accolades and commendation. This year, Netflix also released it’s first African-made show, “Queen Sono”, a spy-drama set mostly in Johannesburg, by South African writer-director Kagiso Lediga. Next up came “Blood and Water” which was set in Cape Town. Further showing that it is not Just a Nollywood affair, but content across other nations of Africa were beginning to make it to the world scene.

Nollywood is known for its quality of content and wide reach, and this had continued to grow. Indeed, the Nigerian film industry continues to portray the rich potentials and beauty of the African continent, taking the world attention from the bad narrative to the positives.

Appearances of Hollywood stars in Nigerian movies and appearance of Nollywood stars in Hollywood movies has also continued to grow.

Notable African exports such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ramsey Nouah, Lupita Nyong’o are some names worthy of note. African content continues to gain massive ground on the world scene, not just film making but also Music and culture.
