Nigerians Continue Protest with #EndSWAT

There is a new hashtag for the protest against Police brutality and extra-judicial killings in some states of the federation. The new hashtag is now #EndSWAT.

This protest started after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu set up a new unit called the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Unit (SARS).

The protesters said they do not see the need for the immediate replacement of the unit which they believe is hasty. Some protesters are of the opinion that it is the same set of personnel from the disbanded SARS that they are planning to use in the new unit.

This morning at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos state, some protesters despite the morning rain were seen chanting songs of solidarity.

They said that the protest will continue until all their five demands are met by the government and there have been procedures to monitor how the demands are being carried out.

Part of their demands include the retraining and psychological evaluation of the members of disbanded SARS and an increase in their salary. They have also requested that violence should not be used on protesters and the unconditional release of arrested citizens.
