Nigerian Senate Approves New Supreme Court Justices


On Tuesday October 13, 2020, the Nigerian Senate confirmed the appointments of eight Supreme Court Justices.

A letter through the President Muhammadu Buhari and read by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, asked the senate to confirm and approve the appointments of eight Justices.

The President in the letter had it that the appointments were on the recommendations of the National Judicial Council.

The President stated that, “In Pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and upon the advice of the National Judicial Council according to their ranking and seniority in the Court of Appeal.”

Senator Opayemi Bamidele, who is the Chairman of the of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, presented the report of the Panel’s screening exercise for the Senators’ consideration.

The Nominees are, Lawal Garba(North West), Samuel Oseji(South South), Tijani Abubakar(North East), Emmanuel Agim(South South).

Others include. Adamu Jauro(North East), Helen Ogunwnmiju(South West), Abdu Aboki(North West) and M.M Saulawa(North West).

Senator Bamidele said the committee has gone through the scrutiny and found all the judges qualified for the positions.
