By Boniface Ihiasota, USA
The police command in Bayelsa State has apprehended a suspect in connection with the destruction of voting materials during the House of Assembly election in Ogbia Local Government Area.
According to reports, political thugs hijacked and destroyed voting materials meant for wards 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the Ogbia area, forcing voters to disperse.
In a briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Yenagoa, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Dankwara, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects linked to the incident.
He described the area as a riverine ward, making it easy for hoodlums to destroy some electoral materials.
Dankwara promised to embark on an assessment of the area to get firsthand information on what transpired, and warned that the law will take its course on anyone found culpable of sending the hoodlums.
Regarding the measures taken by the state command to secure other areas of Bayelsa during the polls, the commissioner noted that the police were working in synergy with other security agencies.
He assured the public that other places in Bayelsa were relatively calm and peaceful, and commended police operatives for their efforts in securing the state during the election.
