Military Officers Seize Power in Gabon
In a significant development, a group of senior Gabonese military officers has announced the seizure of power, learnt Excel Magazine International early Wednesday morning.
These officers asserted that they represent all of Gabon’s security and defense forces and are now asserting their authority over the nation.
During their televised address to the nation, as monitored by Excel Magazine International, the officers declared several sweeping measures, including the cancellation of the election results, the closure of all borders until further notice, and the dissolution of state institutions.
The situation on the ground quickly escalated, with reports of gunfire in the capital city, Libreville, following the officers’ announcement.
This information was relayed by a Reuters reporter, underlining the growing tensions in the region.
In a statement representing the Gabonese people, the military officers expressed their firm commitment to maintaining peace and bringing an end to the current regime.
According to them, these actions stem from widespread discontent and dissatisfaction with both the electoral process and the administration of President Ali Bongo.
Notably, President Ali Bongo had secured a third term in the recent presidential election, claiming victory with 64.27% of the vote, according to the Gabonese election center.
If this coup succeeds, it would mark the eighth such event in West and Central Africa since the year 2020. This development follows the military takeover in Niger in July, which sent shockwaves across the Sahel region.
It’s important to note that President Ali Bongo, 64 years old, assumed office in 2009, succeeding his father, Omar, as president. The situation in Gabon remains highly fluid and continues to evolve rapidly.
