Former United States First Lady, Michelle Obama took to her Facebook page on Saturday to celebrate the National Medal of Arts award that was recently presented to Mindy Kaling by President Joe Biden.
In her post, Obama praised Kaling for her trailblazing work across television, film, and books.
Obama also drew attention to Kaling’s story of being an “other” or an “only” in the entertainment industry, a feeling that many people can relate to.
She highlighted Kaling’s determination to overcome those doubts and make space for others in her field.
“When Mindy started on The Office, she was twenty-four-years old and the only woman and person of color writing on the show. Now, Mindy could have decided to let those feelings of doubt take over, but she didn’t. She stepped forward,” Obama wrote.
Obama also noted that Kaling’s work has helped to empower and widen the sphere of belonging for so many women of color. “With her work, she’s widened the sphere for belonging and empowering so many women along the way by allowing themselves to be seen,” Obama said.
The post concluded with congratulations to Kaling on her award, with Obama adding the hashtag #WomensHistoryMonth.
The post received widespread attention on social media, with many users celebrating Kaling’s achievements and thanking Obama for shining a light on her work.
