Mad Magazine Cartoonist Al Jaffe Dies at 102
By Boniface Ihiasota, USA
Al Jaffee, the award-winning cartoonist best known for his work with Mad Magazine, passed away at the age of 102 on Monday due to multiple organ failure, according to his granddaughter, Fani Thomson.
Jaffee’s Fold-Ins, which satirized popular figures and events with his distinct visual style, were featured in virtually every issue of Mad for decades, and were compiled into a four-volume box set in 2011.
Jaffee’s contributions to Mad were a staple of baby-boom era culture, and continue to be an inspiration for comedians to this day.
One of his most memorable works was a Fold-In from 1964 which depicted Nelson Rockefeller and Barry Goldwater as a single image of Richard Nixon when folded.
Despite being a fixture at Mad for nearly a decade, Jaffee’s most famous creation for the magazine did not come about until years after his debut in 1955.
