Iran Vows Revenge After Hamas Leader Killed in Air Strike

Iran has pledged to avenge the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who died in an overnight air strike in Tehran, according to Iranian media.

Hamas and Iran blame Israel for the strike, but Israel has not commented as at press time.

However, Israel has previously vowed to eliminate Hamas leaders.

Haniyeh, 62, was the most senior leader to be killed since the October 7 attacks.

His death has sparked widespread outrage, with Iran declaring three days of mourning and promising “harsh punishment” against Israel.

The killing comes hours after an Israeli strike on a Hezbollah commander in Lebanon, heightening fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

Haniyeh’s death could also delay efforts to bring a ceasefire in Gaza, as he was a key player in negotiations.

Iran, Hamas’s most important backer, has vowed to take revenge for Haniyeh’s killing, raising concerns of escalating tensions in the region.

The incident has sparked international concern, with many calling for restraint and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
