I’m a ‘Juju’ Man But My Family Started Anglican Church– Seun Kuti
Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has asserted that his family played a key role in the establishment of the Anglican Church in Nigeria.
Excel Magazine International confirms his great grandfather, Josiah Ransome-Kuti, and grandfather, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, were Anglican ministers during colonial Nigeria.
Despite his family’s historical connection to propagating Christianity in Nigeria, Kuti disclosed in a recent episode of the Spill With Phyna podcast that he does not follow the religion. Instead, he boldly declared himself a “juju” worshipper, emphasizing his preference for African traditional religions.
Reflecting on his family’s involvement in the Anglican Church’s inception, Kuti stated, “It was my family that started the Anglican side of Christianity in this country. We are among the pioneers. So, we’ve been there, we’ve done that, and we’ve moved on. And we hope Africans can follow suit.”
Closing his remarks, Kuti encouraged fellow Africans to reconnect with their traditional roots, stating, “I don’t go to church. Na juju me I dey do.”
