On March 28, 2023, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff visited the Emintsimadze Palace in Cape Coast, Ghana where they met with the Oguaa chief Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II and other community leaders.
They were draped in traditional kente cloth during the visit, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange.
During her weeklong tour of Africa, Harris announced that the United States will provide over $139 million in assistance to Ghana, with most of the funds going toward conflict prevention efforts in the Sahel region.
This announcement came after the Vice President pledged more than $100 million in U.S. assistance to Ghana on Monday, emphasizing that the United States’ interests in Africa extend beyond competing with China.
Harris also addressed concerns that the U.S. sees African nations solely through the lens of its competition with China, which has invested heavily in African infrastructure and provided loans to many African countries.
She highlighted the United States’ long-standing partnerships with African nations and emphasized the importance of promoting democracy, human rights, and economic growth in the region.
