Germany Approves Export of 150 Iris-T Missiles to Saudi Arabia
The German government has approved the export of 150 Iris-T air-to-air missiles to Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
This decision was communicated through a statement from the German Economy Ministry to the parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee, as reported by Der Spiegel.
According to the publication, the Federal Security Council granted the authorization for the missile export at the close of the previous year. Key figures, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz and several ministers, hold membership in the Federal Security Council.
This development follows recent announcements from the German government indicating a potential approval for the delivery of Eurofighter jets to Saudi Arabia, reflecting improved relations with Israel.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s statements in support of this stance align with the position of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Nevertheless, Baerbock’s remarks have faced criticism within her own party, particularly concerning concerns about human rights issues in Saudi Arabia.
