Suleiman Isah, a 24-year-old Nigerian man who married 48-year-old American citizen Janine Sanchez two years ago, has recently joined the United States Army.
Isah was inducted into the California Army National Guard, which consists of 18,450 soldiers.
Isah shared the news online recently, posting a photo of himself with the caption “Alhamdullillah- forever grateful.”
Isah and Sanchez met on social media and formalized their union in an elaborate wedding ceremony on December 13, 2020.
The wedding took place at MOPOL 52 Barracks Juma’at Mosque in Panshekara, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, and Sanchez, a chef based in Lindon, California, traveled to Nigeria for the wedding.
The ceremony was attended by former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani, who is also a relative of Isah’s father.
Sani, who stood in then as Sanchez’s representative, congratulated Isah on his new status in the military via his Facebook post.
Sani also responded to criticism he received for supporting the couple’s union, saying “They criticized me for this interracial marriage, and now Suleiman Isah is happily married and has been enlisted into the California Army National Guard. Congratulations.”
