Federal Government Rolls Out Plans To Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government on Monday rolled out activities to mark the May 29 handover and June 12 Democracy Day.

The federal Government of Nigeria is gearing up plans for series of activities to mark handover ceremony and democracy day which will come up on May 29 and June 12 respectively.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohamed, who spoke at a press briefing in Abuja, said that both days would be marked as a public holiday this year.

The minister also said that most of the activities that used to take place on May 29 previous years have been moved to June 12, while pointing out that that the events slated for May 29, would be low key. He also pointed out that world leaders will only attend the June 12 events.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 12 last year, immortalised and directed that Nigeria’s Democracy Day, hitherto marked every May 29 for the past 19 years, be shifted to June 12, to honour the Late Chief Moshood Abiola and Kudirat Abiola.

Abiola was the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the result of which was annulled by former military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, on June 23, 1993.
