Family Challenges as Schools Reopen in Kenya

Kenyan authorities on Monday, 12th October 2020, allowed schools to reopen across the country after several months due to covid-19 pandemic.

The shutting down of schools in March this year affected the learning of about 17 million students according to UNICEF Statistics.

In various schools across the country, there was a compulsory washing of hands, temperature checks and wearing of face masks.

Despite the good news of reopening schools, some families cannot send their children to school again due to financial challenges. This is as a result of lack of jobs during the hit of the pandemic.

A mother, Judith Achieng, said she lost her job where she performs laundry services and this has affected her as she cannot send her children back to school.
In Kenya, primary school dropout rate was estimated at 21 percent before the outbreak of the covid-19.

UNICEF has expressed fears that that the situation may get worse due to the closure of many learning centers and this is not good for adolescent girls as they may be exposed to HIV, Teenage pregnancy and high risk of sexual abuse.

Schools reopened in Kenya as a result of decline in the number of Covid-19 cases.
