EXCLUSIVE: ASUU Begins Consultation On FG Offer, Set To Meet

The Academic Staff Union of Universities will meet this week to discuss the offer of the federal government aimed at ensuring an end to the strike action embarked upon by the union.
This position was confirmed to EXCEL BREAKING NEWS by a top source within the union who pleaded anonymity.

It would be recalled that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said that the government had pledged to pay N40 billion, being the pending Earned Academic Allowance of the university Teachers.

He explained that out of that amount, N30bn would be paid on or before November 6, while the remaining N10b would be spread equally over two tranches to be paid on May 2021 and February 2022.

While our source noted that the union had more demands than earned allowance, it was still unclear if the union was offered more than earned allowance by the federal government or if the union will end the strike even if no provision was made for funding universities, which is one of the demands of the academic staff union.

EXCEL BREAKING NEWS gathered that the union is expected to meet between the time of this report and Wednesday, October 21, 2020.
