Biden continuously stressed the need for unity, calling it the only “path forward.” in an emotional speech. “I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days, I know the forces that divide are deep and they are real,” he said.
“Our history has been a constant struggle between the American ideal that we’re all created equal and the harsh ugly reality of racism, nativism, fear, demonization. This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge — and unity is the path forward,” he said.
Congratulations to Kamala Harris for making history Wednesday January 20, 2021 as the first Black and South Asian woman sworn in as Vice President of the United States, with her husband, Doug Emhoff as the first second gentleman.
In her role, Harris will also serve as President of the Senate and the tiebreaker in an evenly divided Senate.
Ms. Harris, 56 years old, was sworn in on two Bibles: one that belonged to Regina Shelton, whom Ms. Harris considers a second mother, and one that belonged to Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court justice, who inspired Ms. Harris to pursue law. Ms. Harris also used Ms. Shelton’s Bible when she was sworn in as California’s attorney general and U.S. senator. Ms. Shelton helped take care of Ms. Harris and her sister while their mother worked when they were growing up.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, was selected by Ms. Harris to officiate her swearing-in ceremony.
The media organization also promised to further support the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris administration especially in propagating a government for all.
