By Boniface Ihiasota, USA

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the arrest of an individual identified as Ifechukwu Tom Makwe, who posed as a senator, for his alleged involvement in an internet fraud amounting to €5.7 million (Five Million, Seven Hundred Thousand euros).

This arrest was made following credible intelligence regarding Makwe’s fraudulent activities on the internet.

According to the spokesperson of the Commission, Wilson Uwajeren, in a statement, the arrest took place in the Guzape area of Abuja.

Investigations revealed that the suspect, who operated under various aliases such as Fahad Makwe, Senator Tompolo, Tom Makwe, and Dr. Bran, deceived a Spanish citizen into losing €5.7 million.

Uwajeren further disclosed that the suspect presented himself as an agent of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and a diplomatic solicitor, employing fabricated identities to carry out the fraudulent scheme.

Reports indicate that the suspect initiated the fraudulent activities in 2013 after establishing contact with the victim on a social media platform.

The EFCC spokesperson concluded the statement by stating that the suspect will face charges in court once the investigation is concluded.
