Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II Announces Surprise Abdication
In a New Year TV address, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has revealed her decision to step down from the throne after 52 years of reign. The 83-year-old monarch will officially abdicate on January 14, marking the anniversary of her ascent to the throne in 1972.
“I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” she announced in her address, breaking with the British royal tradition by foregoing a formal crowning ceremony.
Crown Prince Frederik, 55, will assume the role of King of Denmark, becoming the country’s head of state and extending his responsibilities to Greenland and the Faroe Islands. His Australian-born wife, Princess Mary, will take on the title of Denmark’s Queen Consort.
Queen Margrethe’s decision follows a period of reflection prompted by back surgery in early 2023. She expressed gratitude to the Danish public for their support over the years.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the queen’s lifelong dedication, calling the transition a significant moment for Denmark. “Queen Margrethe is the epitome of Denmark, shaping our national identity,” Frederiksen stated.
The unexpected abdication has stirred a mix of celebration and sadness among the Danish people, who widely revered Queen Margrethe. Her popularity and the anticipation that she would reign until her death make this announcement particularly poignant.
Reflecting on her inspiration from the late British Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Margrethe has played a pivotal role in Danish history, breaking tradition when Danish law allowed women to ascend the throne when she was 13.
Affectionately known as Daisy, Queen Margrethe holds the distinction of being the world’s only reigning queen and the longest-serving current monarch in Europe. Her reign, surpassing that of King Christian IV, cements her place in Danish history.
As Denmark prepares for this historic transition, the world bids farewell to an iconic monarch, acknowledging Queen Margrethe’s enduring impact on the nation she has served for over five decades.
