Cultural Excitement as Ogu Kingdom Initiates Young Virgins Into Womanhood
Ogu Kingdom in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State has once again captured widespread attention on social media with images from its annual Iria festival—a traditional ceremony marking the transition of young virgins into womanhood.
Excel Magazine International gathered that the Iria festival is a longstanding tradition among the Okrika people, organized by various towns, predominantly during the December and January period.
With roots dating back to the 16th century, this event consistently generates enthusiasm among both local residents and outsiders, who eagerly anticipate the final months of the year for a glimpse of the maidens undergoing the rite of passage.
Beyond serving as a cultural spectacle, the Iria Festival is regarded as an annual competition, providing families in Okrika with an opportunity to showcase the virtue of chastity.
Parents proudly present their virgin daughters, preparing them for the traditional “fattening room” experience.
In this phase, the young women are nourished with a diet of body-enriching meals, notably pounded yam mixed with pounded plantain and fresh fish.
This year’s event has gained widespread attention, with photos from the festival circulating widely on social media platforms.
