The Ministry of Interior in Nigeria has revealed that a total of 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenship in 2022 alone.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, made this revelation during the 64th session of the State House Ministerial briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the Aso Rock Villa.
Dr Belgore also provided additional information, stating that a total of 150 Nigerians renounced their citizenship between 2006 and 2021.
The reasons for renouncing citizenship are not stated, but it is likely that economic, political and social factors may have played a role.
This news is likely to spark concern among government officials, as the number of citizens renouncing their citizenship is on the rise.
The government may consider taking steps to address the issues that are causing citizens to renounce their citizenship, such as improving economic opportunities, addressing political corruption, and addressing social issues such as poverty and social injustice.
In any case, the government will have to take this information seriously and take action to address the root causes of citizens renouncing their citizenship. This is important for the stability and prosperity of the country.
