By Boniface Ihiasota, USA
Gunmen have abducted Chukwudi Ogbonna, the candidate of the Accord Party for the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Constituency 2 in the Rivers State House of Assembly elections scheduled for March 18.
According to reports, Mr. Ogbonna was kidnapped on Monday night while driving near Port Harcourt in his car at Rumuigbo.
The gunmen allegedly forced him to stop and then took him away with his car.
Ifeaka Nwakiri, the candidate’s cousin’s brother, confirmed the incident Tuesday morning, stating that they had already reported the matter to the Kala Police station.
The motive behind the kidnapping remains unclear, and there has been no communication from the kidnappers yet.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in some parts of Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region where Rivers State is located.
Authorities are yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident, and it is unclear if any rescue operation is underway.
The safety of politicians and citizens ahead of the forthcoming elections has become a matter of concern in recent times, and stakeholders are calling for stronger measures to be put in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the electoral process.
