Asake Takes Tattoo to Next Level… See What He Writes on His Neck

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Afrobeats sensation Asake delved into his musical journey, ascent to fame, and the significance of his tattoos.

As noted by the outlet, Asake’s decision to adorn his neck with ink coincided with a period of profound disillusionment and uncertainty in his musical pursuit.

Reflecting on his mindset at the time, Asake shared, “I was tired, I felt like, I don’t want to keep trying.”

However, rather than succumb to doubt, he opted to immortalize his resilience and ambition through body art.

The tattoo became a tangible emblem of his unwavering determination to carve out a successful path in the entertainment realm, propelling him to redouble his efforts and evolve into the beloved singer he is today.

Addressing the prevailing stigma associated with tattoos in Nigeria, particularly those visible on the neck, Asake lamented the pervasive discrimination faced by individuals adorned with such markings.

“In Nigeria, if you have a tattoo on your neck, you can’t work anywhere. I can’t work for any company, I can’t sell anything,” he observed, lamenting the societal barriers encountered by tattooed individuals in the country.

Central to Asake’s ethos is the mantra of authenticity and self-awareness, epitomized by his first-ever tattoo, “Stay real,” etched across his hands.

However, he acknowledged the challenges of maintaining one’s identity amidst the cultural melting pot of Los Angeles, where the pressure to conform and assimilate can be overwhelming.

“It triggers you to be more than what you are, but I feel like everybody’s going through the same thing in this place. People find it hard to be normal, to be original,” he reflected, offering insight into the existential struggle faced by many in the pursuit of authenticity within the entertainment capital.
