Alex Otti Takes Bold Step: Suspends Transport Levies on Commercial Drivers in Abia
By Boniface Ihiasota,USA
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced the suspension of all transport levies imposed on commercial drivers in the state, as part of his administration’s commitment to reforming revenue collection methods and eliminating extortion, intimidation, and harassment of motorists.
The governor’s directive, conveyed through a statement by Ferdinand Ekeoma, the special adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, on Wednesday, aims to create a transparent and organized system for the collection of transport levies without infringing upon the rights and privileges of Abia residents.
Effective immediately, the suspension will remain in place until the government reviews the existing levies and unveils its plans for a fair and accountable approach to collecting such fees.
The governor emphasized that the current method is outdated and detrimental to the well-being of the people and the state’s economy, and therefore cannot be allowed to persist.
In light of this decision, the governor urged all individuals involved, both directly and indirectly, to cease these activities promptly, warning that those who fail to comply will face legal consequences.
Security agencies have been duly informed and instructed to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating this directive.
