U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has Thursday visited Tanzania, where she praised the country’s recent democratic reforms and encouraged the government’s efforts towards a more inclusive and democratic society.
Accompanied by Tanzania’s first female president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, Harris commended the lifting of a ban on opposition rallies and the encouragement of press freedom, calling them “important and meaningful steps” towards democratic reforms in the country.
Hassan, who came to power as a member of the ruling party, has also undone some of Tanzania’s more oppressive policies.
During their meeting, Excel Magazine International learnt that the two leaders discussed matters of good governance, long-term economic growth, and the climate crisis.
In a virtual summit on democracy hosted by the White House this week, Tanzania participated, which Hassan noted as “sends a clear message that the fathers of democracy recognize our efforts in building a democratic nation.”
The meeting between the two female leaders was hailed by Hassan as “another milestone,” and an “inspiration and a testimony to Tanzanian young girls.”
Harris reiterated the United States’ commitment to working alongside democratic governments in support of the democratic aspirations of the people of Africa, pledging continued collaboration towards strengthening democracy on the continent.
