5bn bailout: FG, Senate Disagree over Bailout for Airline Operators, others

The Senate has strongly disagreed with the Nigerian Federal government over the 5 billion bailout intended to assist airline operators in the country.

The Senate stated that the bailout will not be sufficient enough to cushion the effects of the Pandemic on the aviation industry.

Speaking at the beginning of a 3-day public hearing for 6 executive aviation bills, in Abuja, The Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Smart Adeyemi – APC, Kogi West, stated that there was an urgent need for the Federal government to upwardly review the bailout money set out for the Aviation Industry. He said the money was insufficient, and would do little to help the industry.

“The money approved for the airline operators is too small, going by what is happening globally in the aviation sector. If we want to keep the airline operators in business, and we don’t want them not to close their shops and go home, then the federal government needs to shore up the amount it wanted to give the airline operators” he said, speaking at the public hearing.

Adeyemi maintained that The bailout was a far cry from what would be sufficient for maintenance of aircraft’s and retaining of workers.

He urged the federal government to reconsider the decision.
