39 Palestinian Detainees Freed in Exchange Deal with Hamas
In a recent development, 39 Palestinian detainees have been released from Israeli prisons as part of a deal mediated by Qatar.
The exchange aimed to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, including 24 women and 15 teenage boys accused of offenses ranging from throwing stones to attempted murder.
The release took place at the Beituniya checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, with the detainees chosen from a list of 300 compiled by Israel.
The deal includes a four-day pause in the fighting, and the prisoners, most of whom were held on remand, are now allowed to return home according to Israel’s prison service.
The situation remains tense, with clashes reported at the checkpoint during the release.
The truce deal also involved the release of 13 Israeli hostages by Hamas, and separately, Thai nationals held by Hamas in Gaza were released. The overall agreement aims to release a total of 150 Palestinians from Israeli jails and increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, with the entry of medical supplies, fuel, and food. This comes in the context of heightened tensions and conflict between Israel and Hamas.
