Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Monday presented house keys and a Letter of Allocation to former Head Coach and Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Clemens Westerhof, in fulfillment of the Federal Government’s pledge 25 years ago for winning the 1994 African Cup of Nations and guiding the Super Eagles to first ever World Cup appearance in the United States of America in 1994.
The presentation took place at the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing Headquarters, Mabushi in Abuja.
In his remarks at the event, Fashola described football as a great unified in Nigeria, recounting how Westerhof’s indelible marks in the country through the round leather game.
According to him, “Football is a great unifier in Nigeria. It is one of areas where religion, ethnicity and the things that are used to stoke us to anger take a back seat. It was the arena of expression of Clemens Westerhof in his service to Nigeria as our National team football coach.
“He ended our frustrating and unsuccessful attempts to qualify for the World Cup by qualifying the Super Eagles for their first World Cup in USA in 1994.
